Frequently asked
Most of what people write in about is covered below. Skim before you email — but if the answer isn’t here, write to us anyway.
Is Stepa free?
Yes. Stepa is free on iPhone and Android: step counting, mates, nudges, duels, the weekly Mates race, Focus walks, ready-made loops and three loops of your own a month cost nothing. Stepa Pro is optional at £4.99 a month or £39.99 a year, and adds unlimited loops, hosted group walks, offline loops and streak insurance. No ads, and we don’t sell your data.
Does Stepa work on Android?
Yes. Stepa is on the App Store for iPhone and on Google Play for Android, with the same features and prices on both. On iPhone it reads your steps from Apple Health; on Android it reads them from Health Connect. You need iOS 15.1 or later, or Android 8 or later.
Do I need a smartwatch?
No. Your phone counts your steps on its own. If you wear a watch or fitness tracker that syncs to Apple Health or Health Connect, those steps count in Stepa too.
What is the weekly Mates race?
Every week, Monday to Sunday, you and your mates race along one real route, each walking from wherever you are. Your steps move you along it, so you can see who’s ahead at a glance. No mates yet? You race Stepa pace.
Why don’t my steps match Apple Health or Health Connect?
Stepa shows the same step total as Apple Health on iPhone or Health Connect on Android. If the two numbers differ, it’s almost always a permission.
On iPhone, open Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Stepa and make sure Steps is on. On Android, open Health Connect → App permissions → Stepa and allow Steps. Then pull to refresh the home screen. We backfill the last 30 days the first time you connect.
How do duels work?
A duel is a head-to-head step race with one of your mates. Pick who you want to walk against, choose a length (24 hours, 48 hours, or 7 days), and send it. They accept, the clock starts, and the walker with the most steps when time runs out wins.
Stepa counts your steps the same way it always does. You can see the live leaderboard inside the duel at any time.
What does Stepa do with my location?
Location is only used to plot walking loops that start and end at your front door, and to record the routes you walk. Your coordinates are sent encrypted over HTTPS to our routing server, used to build the loop, and then not retained on our servers. The finished loop lives with your account; the raw location query does not.
Step counting itself never needs location. You can turn location off entirely in your phone’s settings — steps, duels, and friends all keep working. See our privacy notice for the full detail.
Can I delete my account?
Yes — and it’s a hard delete, not a soft one. In the app, go to Profile → Delete account. You’ll be asked to confirm, and then your account, step history, friend list, and duels are removed within 30 days (some backup snapshots persist for up to 60 days before being overwritten).
You can also do it from the web without opening the app — visit getstepa.com/delete, enter your email, and click the verification link we send you.
How do I export my data?
Go to Profile → Download my data. We’ll prepare a JSON archive of everything we hold on you — account details, step history, friends, duels, saved loops — and email you a download link, usually within a few minutes.
If the link hasn’t arrived after a few hours, email hello@getstepa.com and we’ll send it manually.
Why does Stepa ask for notifications?
Notifications tell you when a mate challenges you to a duel, when someone finishes a walk, or when a duel you’re in is about to end. They’re optional. Turn them off in Profile → Notifications inside the app, or in your phone’s settings (Settings → Stepa → Notifications on iPhone).
I lost my streak. Can you restore it?
No, we don’t restore streaks by hand. A streak counts the days you reach your daily step goal, so a missed day resets it. Stepa Pro includes streak insurance: two saves a month, so one off day doesn’t cost you the run.
If your steps on a given day were clearly wrong (for example Apple Health or Health Connect didn’t sync), email us and we’ll take a look.
The app crashed or feels slow.
Sorry about that. Email hello@getstepa.com with:
- What you were doing when it happened
- Your phone model and iOS or Android version
- The app version (Profile → About)
We use Sentry for crash reporting, so in many cases we’ll have already seen the crash by the time you message us — but a note from you is how we know it actually affected a real person.
Can I change my handle?
Yes. Profile → Change handle. Handles must be unique, between 3 and 20 characters, and can contain letters, numbers, and underscores. Your friends’ references to you update automatically.
Which languages is Stepa in?
The Stepa app and this website are in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Polish. The app follows your phone’s language.
Who makes Stepa?
Harry, Seb and Ollie, three mates from Bournemouth and Reading. Stepa is run by SocialClimb Marketing Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales. More on our about page.
Still stuck?
Email hello@getstepa.com. Harry, Seb, or Ollie will reply — usually within a few hours, and always within 24.
